Understanding Comprehensive Psychological and Neuropsychological Assessments

Psychological assessments help provide a deeper understanding of a child, teen, or young adult’s emotional, behavioral, social, learning, and cognitive functioning. Our assessments are designed to answer important questions, identify strengths and challenges, and create clear recommendations for home, school, and treatment support.

Assessments can help families better understand why a child may be struggling academically, emotionally, socially, or behaviorally, while also highlighting their unique strengths and abilities.

What We Assess

Assessments can help determine whether difficulties with focus, impulsivity, organization, emotional regulation, or executive functioning are related to ADHD or other underlying factors.

ADHD & Attention Difficulties

Learning Disabilities

Testing can identify challenges in reading, writing, math, processing speed, memory, and other learning-related skills to better understand academic struggles and guide school accommodations and interventions.

Giftedness & Cognitive Strengths

Evaluations can also identify advanced cognitive abilities, learning profiles, and areas of exceptional strength that may benefit from additional enrichment or academic support.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Evaluations explore social communication sensory differences, flexibility, emotional understanding, behaviors, and developmental patterns to better understand whether a child meets criteria for autism spectrum disorder.

Emotional & Behavioral Functioning

Assessments can help understand emotional regulation, behavioral concerns, mood difficulties, family dynamics, social struggles, and overall psychological functioning.

  • The process begins with an intake meeting with parents to better understand concerns, history, and goals for the evaluation. A school observation is often included as an important part of the assessment to better understand the child’s functioning in their natural environment. Testing sessions are typically scheduled in the morning and last about 2–3 hours at a time, depending on the child’s age and needs. After testing is completed, the data is carefully analyzed and a comprehensive report is written. Parents then meet with Dr. Adi Soffer or her associate for a feedback session to review findings, diagnoses if applicable, and recommendations.
